What to expect

All sessions can be either face to face or online via Zoom, Skype or WhatsApp and usually are held on a weekly basis. Where this is impractical because of your circumstances,  an alternative arrangement can be discussed.

After agreeing a mutually suitable date and time, the next step is the initial consultation.  This is an opportunity for us to meet, whether online or in person, for me to understand what it is that you would like to achieve through counselling and assess whether I can meet your needs. If I felt that you might benefit from working with a different counsellor, perhaps because they offer a particular expertise, I would do my best to make a  recommendation.

I ask clients to complete and return a short questionnaire prior to the initial consultation. This provides me with a brief snapshot of what is going in your life and allows more time in the session to discuss what you are finding challenging and are wanting to change through the counselling.

With couples the initial consultation is generally followed by an individual session with each of the partners. This helps me get to know each of you better and understand your individual perspectives in greater depth. I will ask you about your experience of growing up in your family of origin and about your  previous couple relationships. It is useful for me to understand the values, beliefs and expectations that you each bring to your couple relationship as well as your expectations of your roles as partners and parents.

If the decision is to progress onto ongoing counselling, we will agree an agenda for the work and review this regularly to ensure that your requirements are met.
